Massaging the Message

Sometimes designing a book can be a challenge. The use of layout, spreads, grids, etc. all come into play. After reading this chapter-we can see that creating these were not always easy. The book quotes: "The most striking aspect of The Medium is the Massage is the way it explores the space of the book-its literal scale and sequential unfolding-as part of its content." We can see by exploring these pages in the chapter that different spreads are created and the use and placement of pictures and whatnot are all altered to be different. Looking at a spread page to page in a book and having it repeat itself gets old and boring.

Placement is a huge part of creating a successful spread. With that said, it was not always accepted for a designer to allow things to bleed off the page. Expanding the boundaries and breaking the rules is what artists and designers today strive to do. Why have rules about art? Who honestly even can explain what art truly and realistically is? It is a tough question and as designers we have to take into account what truly appeals to the eye and what can be liked-or simply not liked for that matter. Not only does the image I attached show how a spread can be played with, but it also gives a fortake on the use of typography. Why not make our spreads fun and exciting to look at. The challenge to read the text that creates an image appeals to the eye and allows us to remember the piece.

Lisa and I worked together for the 5 examples of each design paradigm. Here are some of my examples to coordinate with hers.
