Identity Project-Jenn

I had a really rough time deciding what to do for this project. There are so many things that are a part of my life but are really not that extremely influential to me. Like I stated in my last post, I am German and only attend my Presbyterian church a few times a year. These things are obviously a part of my life, but not enough so that I could actually create an entire project from them. With that said, I finally decided to do my project on Pageantry. This also became a huge issue because I wasnt sure where to take it. I have been competing in pageants for years, but how do I portray that in a graphic design aspect.
I chose to do my layouts a little bit different this time. I had first started out thinking that I was going to do a before/after shots for which I would be able to show a before image of me not in pageants and then an after image of me in pageants. I wanted to show who I am outside of pageantry and then the difference of who I am....and so on. This was extremely hard to make and was on a time crunch due to projects in other classes as well, so I ended up choosing to create something that interests me in school and with my future. When I graduate I would like to find a publication design job doing layouts for magazines. It is something that I really enjoy doing and wanted to incorporate that into this project. So I ended up creating four different layouts of what Magazine covers might entail for me. I did two of me on a everyday/normal basis and then I did two of me on a Pageant based basis. The words surrounding the layout are all relevant to the imagery and to me in some fashion.
I am still not sure if I like any of these, but I was on a time crunch and really needed to push myself to finish the project. I would like to at some point go back in and recreate or keep moving within the design.

UPDATE: 03/01/2012 - I am behind schedule so I will not be able to present today.

Given the nature of the critiques in the past and the size of this class, I see often times we take two full classes to truly get through everyone's things. Unfortunately, I ask that I may present on day 2 - this will give me time to put the rest of it together and provide a print copy. The coloring process has been laborious, but I have an updated Indesign file that is being done as each illustration is finished. Hopefully I can have posted up in full by Friday morning. Apologies in advance, Professor Wilber.

My color scheme for my booklet, although I'll be using tints and shades where necessary of these colors...

Finished Illustrations (Pre Vector).

Just posting my progress so far. After talking to Professor Wilber, I'm scrapping the more abstract look of my early mockups for the more illustrated style of pencil thumbnails. I will be keeping the color scheme, so in a way - my more horizontal early works will function as a type of mood board for me.

I just got sick of my initial layout that felt more like a children's book and didn't like the typefaces I used. After going to the VSA Design tour with the AIGA group the other day, I got more inspired in terms of the layout.

Above is my layout guide and the first 5 illustrations out of 9, done in marker and ink. I have to still vectorize them and then change the inks to a navy or indigo blue.

Alex Sheyn, More Identity Progress

Ok so, this is taking ALOT more time than I thought it would. Making the mold was really difficult, it took a very long time and didn't come out quite right, the plastic hardened with a lot of air bubbles so it came out a lot more rough than the mold. I spent several days sanding it and now i'm really behind, but I think it will still turn out cool.

Project#2

Dylan Farr - Identity 2

Here's my progress thus far. It still feels very cut and paste and I'm not sure how to resolve that problem. I tried to push the puzzle thing a little further and I think it's working for the better.

Emily Iammarino - Project 2: progress work

Progress work for identity project, still making book, but scrapped the brand idea to focus more on how we express our culture.

Need help with: Type Layout (not sure if type is working in form that i have it because it's very loose) - suggested grid structure?

BK - Identity

I changed my format drastically. Going to do a large, deconstructive poster. The idea is still somewhat the same but I changed it conceptually. I still have the places where my relatives live written in Korean. I painted and deconstructed a morning glory flower. It's the national flower of Korea. It's a constant in every trip I've made to Korea and seen my relatives. The flower blossoms in the morning and dies at night (how the name came to be). Likewise, most of my memories of my family are very short-lived. In the expanse of my entire life, they are moments. However, I remember these moments very clearly and I long to create more. I'm not extremely close with all of my relatives but I believe family is important, no matter what.

Identity Project Idea-Jenn

My idea for this project is going to be based on pageants. Something that is a big part of my life that I put a lot of time and energy into. I want to do eight panels of a more or less before and after shots. The left side I want to include images of me and how I look, act, and am on a daily basis. My everyday clothes, shoes, personality, etc. On the right side however I want to portray images of my pageant life. More perfected, glitz, glam, etc.

For example. I want one of my stills to be of my feet. The left side I might have an image of my legs and my feet wearing everyday shoes or boots. Casual look. On the right side I want to include an image of my legs and my feet in high glitz heels.

So I want to do 8 different panels or stills of each of these shots. I do not know if I will include words, or any text. Any input anyone?

Alex Sheyn Identity Progress

Hey everyone, I couldn't be in class today so that I can keep working on my project. Im posting some of my in progress pictures, if you look at my previous post it should make more sense how this relates to the project. If you don't remember, Im trying to do a packaging design for me, or an avatar of me. You will flip through this book-like box, and each page will have a new part cut out of it with a little icon of my cultural identity that you will place on my figure.

The first step, though, is to create the figure, so I started sculpting an avatar for myself. I am going to make a cast of it and then mold it with plastic/resin. (that's the plan, at least...)
